Course Description
This course is designed to acquaint the student with musical styles and their historical backgrounds. Emphasis is placed on musical forms and performance mediums and will include selections from the Western canon. It is intended for music majors but open to all students who are able to read music.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will understand the different style characteristics of music in antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque era, Classical era, Romantic era, and the twentieth century, by:
- identifying characteristics of monophonic music from antiquity and the philosophy and ideas that inspired it.
- identifying characteristics of monophonic and polyphonic sacred and secular musicof the Middle Ages.
- identifying characteristics of polyphonic and homophonic sacred and secular music of the Renaissance.
- identifying characteristics of polyphonic and homophonic sacred and secular music of the Baroque.
- identifying characteristics of various textures of sacred and secular music of the Classical period.
- identifying characteristics of various textures of music of the Romantic and Post-Romantic periods.
- identifying characteristics of various textures of music of the twentieth century.
- demonstrating acceptably on an examination the ability to distinguish the style characteristics of music from successive periods.
- The student will develop an understanding of musical genres from the major periods of music history by:
- identifying plainchant, motets, Masses, and secular forms vocal and instrumental forms from the Middle Ages.
- identifying madrigals, sacred music, and secular instrumental forms from the Renaissance.
- identifying the various styles of opera, cantatas, oratorios, and vocal chamber music from the Baroque, as well as instrumental forms, such as the suite, the concerto grosso, the trio sonata, the toccata, and the fugue.
- identifying forms from the Classical period, including, but not limited to, opera, chamber music, the solo concerto, the symphony, and the sonata.
- identifying forms from the Romantic period, including, but not limited to, opera, chamber music, the concerto, symphonic literature, the sonata, the art song, and the character piece.
- identifying various forms of music from the twentieth century, including, but not limited to, opera, the symphony, the concerto, and solo and chamber instrumental music of the twentieth century.
- demonstrating acceptably on an examination the ability to distinguish the major musical forms in each successive period.
- The student will develop an understanding of the evolving role of the composer in various musical periods of history by:
- identifying the role of the composer in antiquity and the Middle Ages.
- identifying the role of the composer in the Renaissance.
- identifying the role of the composer in the Baroque period.
- identifying the role of the composer in the Classical era.
- identifying the role of the composer in the Romantic period.
- identifying the role of the composer in the twentieth century.
- demonstrating acceptably on an examination the ability to distinguish the role and purpose of the composer and his music in each successive period.
- The student will develop the ability to aurally recognize selected works of the major musical periods by:
- identifying specific works of antiquity and the Middle Ages.
- identifying specific works of the Renaissance.
- identifying specific works of the Baroque period.
- identifying specific works of the Classical period.
- identifying specific works of the Romantic period.
- identifying specific works of the twentieth century.
- demonstrating acceptably on an examination the ability to distinguish selected works from each successive period.
- The student will demonstrate increased ability in writing by:
- completing a scholarly paper outside of the classroom that requires research, analysis, outline, and evaluation.
- completing expository, evaluative, persuasive, and/or personal response writing outside of the classroom in essay form.
- responding to short essay questions on an examination, using complete sentences.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 60% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above state objectives through classroom measures developed by individual instructors.
