Course Description

Subject matter includes electricity, magnetism, light, and some modern physics. A course for students not majoring in the physical sciences. (Credit is only given for PHY 1054 or PHY 2049.)

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the basic vocabulary for this second course in General Physics by defining such terms and concepts as: Coulombs Law, electrostatic induction, electric field, potential difference, current, Ohm's Law, magnetic field, voltmeter, focal length, transformer.
  2. The student will demonstrate an understanding of, and will apply, the concepts of electrostatics and electrodynamics by:
    1. solving problems dealing with Coulombs Law.
    2. describing the process of electrostatic induction.
    3. using the electric field concept to solve problems with a distribution of charge.
    4. relating the potential difference to the electric field.
    5. solving problems dealing with electrical potential energy.
    6. sketching the equipotential surfaces for various shaped conductors.
    7. solving physical problems dealing with capacitance and energy stored.
    8. solving problems in capacitance when a dielectric material is used.
    9. stating Ohm's law.
    10. solving problems with series and parallel resistors.
    11. solving problems dealing with Ohm's Law and conservation of energy in electric circuits.
    12. using Kirchoff's Laws in a complete electrical circuit.
  3. The student will demonstrate an understanding of, and will apply, the concepts of magnetism and the relation between magnetism and electrodynamics by:
    1. defining the magnetic field in terms of the force on a moving charge or in terms of current.
    2. solving problems dealing with magnetic field phenomena.
    3. defining the magnetic field due to an infinite straight conductor, circular turn and solenoid.
    4. defining induced electromotive force (emf) and magnetic flux.
    5. applying Faraday's Law and Lenz's Law to determine induced emf where there is a flux change.
  4. The student will demonstrate an understanding of, and will use, the concepts of optics and light by:
    1. applying the equations for thin lenses to the solution of physical problems.
    2. obtaining the solutions to certain physical problems with thin lenses by ray diagrams.
    3. solving problems dealing with the law of reflection of plane, concave and convex surfaces.
    4. applying the theory of simple lenses to those optical systems illustrated.
    5. applying the concept of wave motion to a description of light.
    6. doing the following:
      1. discussing and applying the quantum theory to the atom.
      2. stating the principles of special relativity and discussing the appropriate quantities.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
