College of Natural Sciences

Credit(s): 1
Contact Hours: 45
Effective Term Spring 2025 (645)

Requisites

Pre- or Co-requisite CHM 2211 with a minimum grade of C

Course Description

This laboratory course involves synthesis, purification and identification of organic compounds involving special techniques such as infrared spectroscopy or gas chromatography.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will demonstrate proficiency in the application of simple organic lab procedures by:
    1. applying the proper techniques in the use and care of special organic lab equipment.
    2. applying proper lab safety protocols and procedures.
    3. using infrared (IR) spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-NMR), carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (C-NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS) to determine structures of organic compounds.
    4. synthesizing and purifying organic compounds.
  2. The student will demonstrate qualitative tests on an unknown liquid or solid, and from the results of these tests, logically deduce the class of the compound or its identity by:
    1. identifying a general unknown by the use of physical constants, solubility classification, elemental analysis, functional group tests and melting or boiling points of the unknown.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
