Credit(s): 1
Contact Hours: 45
Effective Term Spring 2025 (645)

Requisites

Pre- or Co-requisite CHM 2210 with a minimum grade of C

Course Description

This laboratory course involves basic techniques for the synthesis, purification and identification of organic compounds. These techniques include filtration, separation, melting point determination, spectroscopy, recrystallization, distillation, evaporation, reflux and assembly and care of glassware.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will demonstrate the basic techniques and procedures used in synthesizing, purifying, or identifying organic compounds by:
    1. demonstrating the proper techniques in the use and care of special organic lab equipment.
    2. demonstrating a knowledge of proper lab safety protocols and procedures.
    3. determining accurately the boiling point of a liquid.
    4. distilling liquid mixtures utilizing both simple and fractional distillation, and explaining the advantages and limitations of each procedure in separation processes.
    5. demonstrating the proper use of a separatory funnel.
    6. determining correctly the melting point of a pure solid or a solid mixture in the identification of a solid unknown.
    7. determining empirically the best solvent or solvent pair for a crystallization process and recovering the pure, recrystallized sample, in high yield, by use of a Buchner funnel and suction filtration.
    8. assembling a reaction train for the synthesis of an organic compound, collecting and purifying the final product.
    9. setting up the apparatus for refluxing a liquid mixture and synthesizing a compound by this method.
  2. The student will apply basic chemical principles learned in actual laboratory syntheses by:
    1. explaining the mechanisms by which the various reactions in simple qualitative tests or synthetic procedures occur.
  3. The student will learn to apply basic stoichiometric principles used in calculations involving quantities of reactants and products by:
    1. determining the limiting reagent.
    2. calculating theoretical and actual yields.
    3. calculating the percentage yield in a laboratory synthesis.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
