Course Description
This course is designed to introduce the student to the study of the cause and effect of disease on the human body. Topics of study will include: coroner and medical examiner, terminology, and general and special pathology. Emphasis will be on tissue changes which affect the embalming process.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of terminology which will enable competent communication with members of health professions and the public by:
- defining descriptive terminology related to disease.
- explaining etiology of diseases.
- applying word roots, prefixes, and suffixes to build and define medical terms.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of general pathology and how disease affects the human body by:
- explaining the divisions of pathology.
- explaining the nature of disease.
- explaining the inflammation process.
- explaining cellular reaction to injury.
- defining structural abnormalities.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of special pathology and how disease affects particular organs and organ systems by defining and giving examples of:
- disturbances in the circulatory system.
- diseases of the blood.
- diseases of the heart and blood vessels.
- neoplasms and cysts.
- diseases of digestive system.
- diseases of respiratory tract.
- diseases of urinary system.
- diseases of nervous system.
- diseases of male and female reproductive system.
- diseases of the bone and joints.
- diseases of the endocrine glands.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of recognizing problems presented prior to and during embalming caused by the disease process by:
- relating tissue changes caused by injury to case analysis.
- relating tissue changes caused by diseases of the circulatory system to the embalming process.
- explaining infectious disease considerations for the embalmer.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the role of the coroner and medical examiner in forensic pathology by:
- explaining the jurisdiction and responsibilities of the coroner and medical examiner.
- listing the types of death for investigation.
- identifying the general features of specific injuries.
- explaining the purpose of the autopsy.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
