Course Description
This course is a continuation of Embalming I (FSE 2100). Theories and principles of embalming, embalming chemicals, cavity treatments, and disaster management will be studied with an emphasis on application to specific cases.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of embalming chemicals by:
- listing eight components of embalming fluids.
- explaining the purpose of:
- preservatives
- germicides
- modifying agents (humectants, buffers, and water conditioners)
- anticoagulants
- surfactants
- dyes
- deodorants
- vehicles
- giving examples of 1.b. 1-8.
- explaining index of embalming fluids and solutions.
- explaining the difference between cavity and arterial fluids.
- explaining supplemental and accessory fluids.
- discussing safety in handling of embalming fluids according to OSHA Hazard Communication Standard.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the purpose of case analysis by:
- defining embalming analysis.
- identifying variable factors.
- describing case analysis time periods.
- discussing why conditions present in the body are more important in case analysis than the actual cause of death.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of fluid distribution and diffusion by:
- identifying injection procedures.
- discussing mechanical methods of injection.
- explaining pressure and rate of flow.
- defining terms relative to fluid movement.
- listing signs of fluid distribution and diffusion.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of injection and drainage techniques by:
- explaining criteria for selection of an artery and vein for injection and drainage.
- discussing reasons for using one-point, split, multi, or restricted cervical injection methods.
- identifying contents of drainage.
- explaining methods of drainage.
- identifying suture methods.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of cavity treatments by:

- identifying the abdominal regions by the two systems of nomenclature and their contents.
- listing trocar guides.
- explaining equipment use for aspiration.
- explaining aspiration methods for:
- abdominal cavity
- pelvic cavity
- thoracic cavity
- cranial cavity
- defining purge and its characteristics.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of postmortem conditions and their embalming treatments by:
- explaining the embalming procedures for an autopsy case.
- explaining pathological, surface, decomposition, and embalming discolorations and effective treatments.
- identifying vascular difficulties and list intravascular and extravascular treatments.
- identifying embalming techniques for:
- dehydration
- body fluid accumulation
- purge
- deformities and malformations
- contagious and infectious cases
- radiation deaths
- infant
- transfer cases
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the role of the embalmer during disaster management by:
- discussing the role of the embalmer.
- explaining guidelines for preparation of the dead.
- discussing facilities and inventory needed.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
