Course Description
This course provides the student with learning activities which will include selected experiences in the funeral home preparation room. Application of embalming principles to specific cases is emphasized. (Note: Forty (40) hours of participation in the clinical setting are required to complete this course).
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the selection of embalming chemicals used in preparation room by:
- identifying arterial, cavity, and accessory fluids used in preparation room.
- determining index of embalming solutions.
- properly handling embalming chemicals.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of fluid distribution by:
- identifying injection sites.
- identifying drainage sites.
- evaluating embalming results.
- The student will apply knowledge of cavity treatments by:
- identifying methods of aspiration.
- demonstrating cavity treatments.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of application of embalming procedures for specific cases by:
- participating in the preparation of an autopsy case.
- observing and participating in embalmings.
- preparing embalming reports.
- applying cosmetizing, dressing, and casketing.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of employment skills for the position of an embalmer by:
- observing funeral home procedures.
- displaying professional and ethical behavior.
- participating in the removal, preparation, and casketing of deceased human remains.
- displaying professional work habits.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through laboratory measures developed by individual course instructors.
