Course Description

This course offers practical experience in a variety of forms of public speaking, with the focus on development of critical thinking, public address, audience analysis, and research. The student will evaluate the principles of speaking and listening skills and will learn techniques for speech analysis. This course partially satisfies the writing requirements as outlined in the General Education Requirements. Credit is not given for both SPC 1608 and SPC 1608H.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will prepare and organize various types of public speeches by:
    1. determining the purpose of the speech
    2. selecting suitable topics for speeches based on purpose and audience
    3. constructing outlines that logically distinguish the intended topic, thesis, and appropriate supporting points
    4. narrowing a topic to develop specific main points
    5. providing a variety of adequate and relevant supporting points which logically and sufficiently support the thesis statement and main points with illustrations and examples
    6. choosing a suitable organizational pattern based on the audience
    7. connecting supporting points with effective transitions
  2. The student will deliver speeches by:
    1. employing vocal variety in rate, pitch and intensity
    2. articulating and enunciating clearly
    3. using nonverbal behavior which supports the verbal message with eye contact and appropriate posture, gestures, facial expressions and body movements
    4. applying Standard American English appropriate to the audience, topic, purpose and occasion
  3. The student will analyze the audience and adapt speeches by:
    1. investigating audience demographics, ethnic background, gender, age, socio-economic status and other areas
    2. designing an appropriate message suitable to the audience, topic, purpose and occasion
  4. The student will apply rhetorical criticism techniques by:
    1. participating in oral critiques and discussions using students' and other speeches
    2. identifying emotional, logical and credible arguments in a speech
    3. discerning fact and opinion
    4. distinguishing credible sources
    5. determining patterns used in speeches
    6. writing critiques of other students' speeches
    7. utilizing an effective methodology to write rhetorical criticisms of published speeches or critiquing speakers in various speaking occasions
  5. The student will apply public speaking skills used in a group setting by:
    1. identifying the characteristics of types of leadership styles
    2. acknowledging cultural differences of types of leaders
    3. simulating situations and activities in groups which necessarily require leadership skills
  6. The student will employ effective and critical listening skills by:
    1. analyzing his or her own listening skills and hindrances to effective listening
    2. practicing effective listening of speeches to identify supporting points such as sources or evidence
    3. distinguishing main ideas, thesis and supporting points
    4. recognizing relationships between main ideas and supporting points
    5. identifying organizational patterns of speech structure
    6. discriminating between statements of fact and opinion
    7. investigating his or her own bias, prejudices, and stereotyping in listening situations to realize his or her own preconceived attitude toward the speaker
    8. evaluating speakers’ messages by drawing logical inferences and conclusions
  7. The student will demonstrate effective writing by:
    1. researching, planning, and writing various outlines for speeches
    2. writing critiques, essays, reaction, and reflection papers using Standard American English
  8. The student will effectively locate and evaluate sources, including digital content, appropriate to a speech’s topic by:
    1. constructing search strategies to select sources appropriate for the topic and academic content (including library databases, peer-reviewed articles, and other relevant resources)
    2. ethically assessing credibility of information sources by examining the accuracy and currency of the source
    3. paraphrasing, quoting, and citing digital and other source content using Modern Language Association or American Psychological Association guidelines

Criteria Performance Standard

Criteria for Evaluation of Writing: The student will complete the college writing requirement of 2,000 words. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will, with minimum 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by the individual course instructors.
