Course Description
This course is designed to acquaint the student with the fundamentals of avian and exotic pet husbandry, anatomy, physiology, management, and medicine. This course includes the following vertebrate groups as lecture topics: Parrots, Reptiles, Amphibians, Fish, and Exotic Companion Mammals.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will explain the principles associated with parrot fundamentals by:
- Defining appropriate husbandry of parrots.
- Distinguishing unique anatomical/physiological differences occurring in parrots.
- Identifying management techniques used in the proper care and health of parrots.
- Demonstrating appropriate standard of care practices with the parrot patient.
- The student will explain the principles associated with reptile & amphibian fundamentals by:
- Defining appropriate husbandry of reptiles & amphibians.
- Distinguishing unique anatomical/physiological differences occurring in reptiles & amphibians.
- Identifying management techniques used in the proper care and health of reptiles & amphibians.
- Demonstrating appropriate standard of care practices with the reptile & amphibian patient.
- The student will explain the principles associated with fish fundamentals by:
- Defining appropriate husbandry of fish.
- Distinguishing unique anatomical/physiological differences occurring in fish.
- Identifying management techniques used in the proper care and health of fish.
- Demonstrating appropriate standard of care practices with the fish patient.
- The student will explain the principles associated with exotic companion mammal fundamentals by:
- Defining appropriate husbandry of exotic companion mammals.
- Distinguishing unique anatomical/physiological differences occurring in exotic companion mammals.
- Identifying management techniques used in the proper care and health of exotic companion mammals.
- Demonstrating appropriate standard of care practices with the exotic companion mammal patient.
- The student will explain the principles associated with wildlife fundamentals by:
- Identifying management techniques used in the proper care and health of exotic companion mammals.
- Demonstrating good medicine practices with the exotic companion mammal patient.
- Examining positives and negatives to wildlife ownership.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
