Course Description
This course serves as an introduction to the fundamental techniques of veterinary dentistry used by veterinary technicians. Students will attain a foundation level understanding of basic topics such as dental disease, dental preventative care, diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, and equipment usage.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will explain the basics of canine and feline dentistry by
- recognizing differences in the dental formulas of dogs and cats.
- describing the fundamentals of dental charting.
- defining basic dental terms.
- describing the anatomy of a tooth.
- The student will describe the basic characteristics of periodontal disease by
- listing the characteristics of normal periodontal anatomy.
- listing the characteristics of abnormal periodontal anatomy.
- identifying dental instruments used to evaluate the health of the periodontum.
- using the appropriate dental instruments to evaluate the health of the periodontum.
- explaining the appropriate home care necessary to keep the periodontal tissue healthy.
- The student will apply fundamental knowledge of dental equipment use and maintenance by
- identifying the basic instruments used for hand or motorized scaling of teeth.
- developing a typical maintenance schedule for hand instruments.
- The student will demonstrate basic dental radiographic techniques for canines and felines by
- describing when dental x-rays are indicated.
- describing the proper positioning of the patient and placement intraoral dental film for full mouth x-ray studies.
- processing dental films correctly.
- describing the proper identification method for dental films.
- listing the steps for the proper storage of dental film for future retrieval.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of this course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
