Course Description

This course is designed to acquaint the student with basic skills in radiology and surgical nursing.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will summarize the principles of radiation safety by:
    1. describing the principles of radiation safety.
    2. practicing the principles of radiation safety as they produce radiographs.
  2. The student will demonstrate the process of producing diagnostic radiographs by:
    1. employing correct radiographic technique and positioning when radiographing common anatomical sites.
    2. assessing produced radiographs for quality in order to provide maximum diagnostic benefit.
    3. labeling and storing patient radiographs appropriately.
  3. The student will demonstrate the principles of surgical nursing by:
    1. assessing and reporting preoperative patient considerations.
    2. identifying and describing the function of surgical instruments.
    3. properly preparing and positioning patients for a variety of surgical procedures.
    4. using proper techniques to assist operative personnel in order to maintain operating room conduct and asepsis.
    5. properly selecting, wrapping and sterilizing appropriate instruments and supplies.
    6. demonstrating post-operative procedures.

Criteria Performance Standard

Successful completion of course assessments at at least 70%.
