Course Description

This course is designed to acquaint the student with the mathematics and office procedures used in veterinary hospital management. In addition, the laws and the agencies governing the care, use, and movement of animals and current veterinary issues will be discussed. Resume writing, job seeking, and interview techniques will also be covered.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will analyze commonly used office procedures of a successful veterinary practice including office computers by:
    1. contrasting different filing and record keeping systems.
    2. summarizing daily financial statements.
    3. using veterinary office computers to enter data and print reports.
  2. The student will explain basic medical mathematics applicable to veterinary medicine by:
    1. calculating drug dosages.
    2. performing standard medical unit conversions.
  3. The student will describe the agencies and regulations governing the care, use, and movement of animals by:
    1. discussing the state and federal laws and regulations governing the care of animals.
    2. identifying the federal, state, and local agencies charged with regulating or protecting animals and controlling animal disease.
  4. The student will explain problem-solving principles as they apply to veterinary issues by:
    1. comparing the pro and con arguments regarding selected controversies in veterinary medicine.
    2. arguing for or against selected positions regarding selected current issues in veterinary medicine.
  5. The student will analyze resume writing, effective job seeking skills, and career opportunities within veterinary technology by:
    1. writing a resume.
    2. performing an effective job search.
    3. identifying significant aspects of various careers such as research, specialty practice, exotic practice, disease regulation, and industry.
  6. The student will demonstrate the importance of representing the veterinary technology profession to the public by:
    1. participating in a service learning activity.
    2. participating in the state veterinary technician association.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
