Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will explain the principles of completion of a preanesthetic physical exam on a small animal patient by:
- Identifying the equipment used in performing exam procedures.
- Defining the medical terms used in describing the findings of the physical exam.
- Discussing the regional physical exam approach used to perform the exam procedures.
- Differentiating between normal and abnormal findings relating to a preanesthetic physical exam.
- The student will describe veterinary anesthesia, sedation, and local anesthesia by:
- Discussing the differences between anesthesia, sedation, and local anesthesia.
- Applying the classification system for anesthetic patients.
- Explaining how the anesthetic classification of the patient affects the choice of anesthetic technique.
- The student will analyze preanesthetic drugs by:
- Classifying the function of the drugs used as preanesthetics.
- Discussing the expected benefits and potential side effects of preanesthetic drugs listed in the course.
- Explaining the effects of the preanesthetic drugs on the nervous system.
- The student will analyze injectable anesthetic drugs by:
- Describing the ways anesthetic agents are classified.
- Discussing the effects and adverse effects of commonly used drugs.
- Explaining the effects of the injectable anesthetic drugs on the nervous system.
- The student will analyze inhalant anesthetic agents by:
- Explaining ways that the physical properties of inhalant anesthetic agents influence their use.
- Describing the effects, adverse effects, properties and uses of anesthetic gases.
- The student will explain monitoring anesthesia by:
- Identifying instruments and equipment used in the monitoring process.
- Discussing the measurement of vital signs and reflexes relating to the stages of anesthesia.
- Explaining how anesthetic monitoring data is used to determine depth of anesthesia.
- The student will explain anesthetic machines and equipment used during anesthetic procedures by:
- Identifying the parts of the anesthetic machine and common anesthetic equipment.
- Discussing the function of the parts of the anesthetic machine and commonly used anesthetic equipment.
- Describing the proper placement of an endotracheal tube in a small animal patient.
- The student will analyze the use of pain management protocols relating to small animal patients by:
- Defining medical terms relating to pain management.
- Listing common physical and physiologic signs of pain in small animals.
- Discussing differences in pain management medications used in veterinary patients.
- Describing proper record keeping relating to pain management drugs.
- The student will describe common small animal surgical procedures by:
- Defining medical terms relating to small animal surgical procedures.
- Discussing preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative responsibilities of veterinary technicians.
- Listing and describing indications and nursing considerations for common surgical procedures performed in small animals.
Criteria Performance Standard
