Course Description
This course is designed to educate the students on the basics of farm animal health including husbandry, nutrition, dentistry, preventative medicine and clinical and surgical procedures. Students will learn about horses, ruminants, camelids and swine.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will contrast the basic anatomy and physiology of farm animals species by:
- Describing the anatomy and physiology of the organ systems of horses, cows, small ruminants, camelids, and swine.
- identifying specific husbandry conditions that are required to ensure maximal performance (growth, racing, reproduction, meat production or lactation).
- The student use basic terminology associated with farm animal species by:
- Defining terms specific to each farm animal species.
- Identifying breeds within each farm animal species.
- The student will explain the breeding and care of farm animal species by:
- Describing the breeding process for each farm animal species
- Comparing the reproductive and gestation cycle for each farm animal species.
- Describing the care for neonates for each farm animal species.
- The student will compare the nutritional requirements for each farm animal species by:
- Describing the nutritional needs for each farm animal species.
- Discussing how farm animal nutritional needs change across their life stages.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of dentistry for each farm animal species by:
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of dentistry for each farm animal species by:
- Contrasting the dental formulas of the farm animal species.
- Comparing tooth eruption times for the farm animal species.
- Describing dental care for the farm animal species.
- The student will explain herd health principles of farm animal species by:
- Outlining disease prevention procedures for farm animal species through vaccine and husbandry protocols.
- Describing parasite infestation control for farm animal species through de-worming protocols.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of nursing procedures for the farm animal species by describing the common clinical procedures for the various farm animal species.
- The student will discuss basic surgical procedures for the farm animal species by:
- Contrasting anesthesia protocols for the farm animal species.
- Describing the basic surgical procedures for the farm animal species.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
