Course Description

This course is designed to develop computer competencies and literacy. It introduces general computer operations using current computing technologies and data storage techniques. An introduction to a word processing and a spreadsheet program is included. Further, the course will introduce students to the core concepts of computer literacy and essential techniques for locating, analyzing, organizing and presenting information. The course also provides strategies for using a variety of electronic resources while emphasizing internet ethics and security.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will select appropriate basic computer operations and functions by:
    1. defining hardware and software terms.
    2. identifying hardware components of a computer.
    3. identifying basic computer operations and explaining their functions.
    4. performing tasks using current computing technologies and data storage techniques.
  2. The student will perform tasks using a word processing program by:
    1. creating, saving and opening a file.
    2. entering, editing, copying, pasting and moving text.
    3. using spelling, grammar, and thesaurus tools.
    4. changing fonts, alignment, line spacing, margins, and page breaks.
    5. viewing and printing a document.
  3. The student will perform tasks using a spreadsheet program by:
    1. creating a spreadsheet.
    2. formatting the spreadsheet with bold, italic, and centering; changing row/column size; inserting/deleting a row/column.
    3. creating and copying formulas to sum and average values.
    4. creating a chart from the spreadsheet.
    5. saving and printing the spreadsheet in both values and cell formulas format.
  4. The student will select appropriate legal and ethical use of intellectual property by:
    1. defining intellectual property, copyright, fair use, piracy and plagiarism.
    2. identifying laws that protect against copyright infringement.
    3. identifying types of information that are protected under current copyright laws.
  5. The student will select the appropriate features/functions to maintain online privacy and to communicate effectively in an online environment by:
    1. defining the basic principles of netiquette.
    2. identifying acceptable and unacceptable online communication behavior.
    3. creating secure user names and passwords from a user’s perspective.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
